I am looking to get a new scope for my rifle with the turret thing so i can just dial in the yardage and shoot?
i have a remington model 700 in a .270 caliber but dont know what type of scope that i can use for long range shots. i am looking for a scope that will eliminate the need for "hold over". ive heard of the BDC reticle but dont really like it. i like the turret things better but dont know what ones actually work and are of good quality. i want to spend about $500 so please give me some suggestions.
Because every gun is not made exactly the same and does not shoot exactly the same, there is no one scope that can do this out of the box for any given caliber. To do what you want to do will take time and practice and cannot be done by the scope alone. You need to be able to range your target accurately and know the exact point of impact of your bullet for that given range. For distances beyond 300 yards, wind speed and direction will be factors. You will then need to use the turret knobs to adjust your point of impact to match the range of your target. Unless you achieve the necessary proficiency with your weapon system to make these range estimations and adjustments, you will not be able to "eliminate holdover." What you should do is set up your rifle/scope combination so that the projectile is not above or below a certain amount at the maximum effective range of your gun. Since I hunt mostly deer, I set my rifles up so that my bullet is no more than 4 inches above or below my point of aim between the muzzle and the maximum effective range of my chosen setup.
