Remington 870 question?
i have only avbout 300 to spend on the 870 but i want one that can be used for all purposes. i would likle the barrel to be accurate but not to long, have a weaver or similiar scope mount, 7 round mag, and pistol grip stock. i know all that will cost quite a bit though.
i could get the mount, mag, and stock separately, but i have a few questions. if i got on of those no-gunsmithing weaver mounts would that work? i need to know if it will hold just as good as a cantilever type that comes with some guns. i only want to put a red dot on it but i would like to know. thanks for the help
The only real advantage cantilevers have is that the mount, being attached to the barrel, keeps the scope sighted in when/if you switch barrels. If your receiver is drilled and tapped for a Weaver rail as most guns are these days, it'll hold your scope/red dot etc just fine. Only prob with drilled/tapped Weaver mounts is that you lose zero if you remove it and replace it later. The third type, the clamshell mount, is a bracket that fits down over the receiver and screws to the takedown pin holes on both sides of the receiver. Those are rock solid while mounted, but have to be removed every time you strip and clean the gun and that losses zero again. For a red dot sight inside of shotshell range or even a slug out to 50-75 yards or so, all those mounts will work just fine and your loss of perfect zero is going to be not much of a real worry. Go drilled and tapped Weaver rail. It's the least costly and least troublesome.
