A .22 rifle for a reasonable price?
Im 14 and looking for an all around gun for target shooting, varmint, etc... Im looking for a gun on the budget $250 is my limit
I want a nice wood and a dark metal that can have a mag and be loaded manually one at a time. I dont know if I want a semi auto or bolt action whatever is the better deal but it has to have a scope mount
thanks
If you're 14 you probably cannot purchase a rifle just yet. You can receive a rifle that your parents bought for you (18 U.S.C. 922(x)). So be good for Christmas!
I have two recommendations from personal experience. These are the venerable Ruger 10/22 and the classy Savage MkII.
Now lots of people love the Ruger 10/22, and lots of people love to hate the Ruger 10/22 simply because it's so often recommended. The semi-automatic 10/22 isn't the best rifle out of the box, but is capable of fun plinking for hours and hours. The 10/22 is also really cheap, around $200. But it doesn't end there. Where the 10/22 really shines is that it "grows up" with the owner. Want a "tactiLOL" rifle that looks and smells like an AR-15? The 10/22 can become that. Want a match rifle that is sub-MOA? The 10/22 can become that too. After another $300 in parts, my 10/22 is just as good as any other .22LR rifle on the market (well, not as good as those $3,500 Olympic grade rifles, but good enough for me).
The Savage MkII is a bolt-action rifle that's really accurate out of the box. My brother has one, and it's a very nicely finished rifle. The Accu-Trigger pretty much made every other company improve their triggers. And the bull barrel helps with harmonics, as well as heating problems. The downsides is that what you buy is what you'll get; there are very few upgrades available for the Savage MkII. At around $300-$350, maybe that's a good thing too.
Both these rifles fit your fashion preferences, and can be loaded through a magazine or directly into the chamber. The 10/22 requires a separate $5 scope mount (usually it comes with the rifle). The MkII is a bit out of your price range, but the truth with firearms is that they're worth saving up a bit for a slightly better rifle. Rifles can stay with you pretty much forever, and they don't become old like cars or computers. Then again, that's one of the advantages of the ubiquitous 10/22, that you can always add on to it as you get more funds.
Good luck and safe shooting.
