Can anyone recomend a decent scope for an 8mm mauser?
A buddy of mine started "sporterizing" an 8mm mauser and now is selling the rifle for cheap. Long story short I'm a sucker for the 98 mauser actions so for such a cheap price I figured Id salvage what I could. However, the rifle is so far gone that it unfortunately cannot be restored back to its military specs.... my love for mausers particularly 8mm couldn't let this one go to another bad home. Im more of a 12g and C&R restoration kind of guy so Im not sure what would be a good scope for target practice and the occasional elk hunt. Can anyone recommend a reliable scope that's on the lower end of the price spectrum without sacrificing quality?
Go to the local gun shops and check out the used scopes. Look for Redfield, Weaver, Leupold and Nikon. You can often get a 3-9x40mm that was $300+ new for around $150.
Even just an older Weaver K4 can be under 100 and works great for hunting game even with shots at 200+ yards. Not so good a view on targets at 100yards but I've seen several folks hit a 8" plate on demand at the 200 yd line from sitting position. Good enough for hunting use.
