How do you use a rangefinding reticle?
There was a question posted on here about 2 years ago asking this same thing, but it only received one answer, and I'm hoping more people have joined since then who could answer this. I recently purchased a 6-24X rifle scope with a rangefinding reticle. It is not a Mil-Dot. At the bottom of the sight picture is a secondary reticle that looks somewhat like a funnel with lines in it spaced at certain intervals. I'm told this is used to estimate or determine your distance to target, although I don't know how exactly to use it. Any info would be much appreciated.
If it's not a mil-sot, you're going to have to get in touch with the manufacturer and find out from them. The way it normally works is that you use the markings to figure out how big something is. I'll use the mil-dot formula for an example
Lets say you are shooting at a 12 inch target, and when looking through your scope, it's 2 dots tall. you break out your calculator and take 12 (inches) times 27.228, and divide that number by the height in dots (2, in this case). So 12 x 27.778 / 2 = 166.668 So about 167 yards. If it was 1 dot tall, the range would be about 333 yards.
If your scope isn't a Mil-dot, then that formula won't work, but it explains how the fangefinders work. The company who makes the scope should have a website that you can find contact info on, and they might still have a page on that scope, too. Good luck!
