Open Sights vs. Scope?
I'm getting a Model 1895 Cowboy Lever Action Rifle and it can have a scope mounted on it. I want to know if people prefer to use open sights or mount a scope on it. I want to know what kind of scopes are good on this rifle. Would you put on a classic peep sight or one with more power.
Unless you have poor eyesight, there is no reason to destroy the slim, compact size and easily handling nature of a lever rifle with a scope.
Look, this is not a rifle or caliber that can shoot long range....you are really talking about 125 yards and less.....more often much less. If you can't hit a deer's vitals from less than one football field away with open sights, you need some marksmanship training and practice, not a scope.
A nice peep sight, like from Lyman or Williams (available at Brownells) will give you a much more accurate sight picture than the buckhorn open sights, yet still be small and unobtrusive. I strongly suggest you consider this option.
My grandaddy used a Marlin 336 for decades with a Lyman peep. He hunted well into his late 60s and he always had a deer in the freezer.
