How do gun sights work?
Gun sights or scopes are always mounted on top of the gun, slightly above the barrel. So how does aiming down the sight really work, if an upward compensation is really required?
OK, "zeroing" makes sense, but wouldn't that only work for a specific distance?
you're correct a gun will only be zeroed at one specific range but the ballistic arc of most hunting calibers will keep the bullet within 3 inches above or 3 inches below that zero from 100 to about 280 yards from the gun depending on how fast the bullet is traveling & how fast it slows down after it leaves the gun.
this 6 inch "kill zone"area is often called the maximum point blank range for that particular caliber.
for example a 150 gr 308 bullet with a muzzle velocity of 2800 feet per second zeroed @ 200yds will hit 2.7" high at 100 yds, 3 inches high @ 134 yds, 0@ 200 & 3 inches low @ 275yds.
at ranges beyond 275 the shooter will hold over an estimated amount or adjust his sight according to his ballistics tables.
some military sniper scopes have different markings for different ranges built into the scope.
these can be quite effective.
military snipers have made hits with the 175 gr M118LR 7.62x51 sniper round at ranges up to 1000 yds where the bullet rose to a height of 16 FEET above line of sight before hitting the designated target.
of course the target was 5ft 8 in tall but this still required exceptional skill & knowledge of ballistics from the rifle operating team because the maximum effective range of the M118LR is listed as only 875 yds.
