Good scope for varmint?
I just got a Remington 700 sps varmint in 22-250. Im looking for a good scope/rings/mount set up for it. It will mostly be used for prairie dogs, coyotes, jackrabbits, gopher, etc. That being said, I need a pretty powerful variable scope. I like mil-dot, and varmint style recticles. Keep in mind that shooting such small targets at long distance I am looking for extra thin crosshairs. Thanks guys.
Tall order, extra thin crosshairs AND Mil-Dot or Varmint style reticle. The Leupold VX-II 6-18 AO LRDV (Long Range Duplex Varmint) with 40mm Objective ( 1 inch tube) is $530 in the Cabela's Catalog. That would be good starting point because you get a Leupold and most of what you desire. The Fine Duplex is $500, but no hold over points.
The Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14 Z-800 varmint style with 44mm obj. is $875.
The Meopta Mil-Dot 4-16 44mm is $880.
I prefer Leupold bases and rings; they seem most solid, but Millet and Conetrol make good products too.
There are other Leupold,Nikon, Bushnell and Swarovski scopes, plus there are Sightron and others new to the market. You don't always get what you pay for in a scope--I hear tell the Barska Varmint scopes for $100 actually get the job done nicely.
