For Deer hunting what type of .30-06 is better, Semi-auto, bolt, pump?
I'm looking to get a .30-06 rifle for deer hunting and this past hunting season here in Minnesota i used my dad's .30-06 semi-auto to kill a doe that was 35-42 yards from my stand. I am choosing to buy a .30-06 since that is the best all around hunting caliber out there and i had pretty good luck with it. I plan on setting the scope that i get for firing at 100-125 yards. I know that what action i get is really all personal preference but i have only been exposed to a 6mm bolt rifle which is basically no different than a .243 Win. I would use a .30-30 but thats an Ak47 round. I could use the .308 but with some modifications its no different than the 7.62x51mm NATO that the military uses. What i was planning on doing was get a .30-06 in the synthetic stock, bipod added, stainless steel barrel, and whatever action is best for me. Now im a only 5'9" at 135 lbs at 17 years old. I just need some advice on which action i should get.
You are going to get a lot of different opinions. Because basically, that is what it boils down to. But I prefer an automatic.And because of brand loyalty due to its total dependability, the Browning Automatic.Why? Because of this one simple reason- over the years the automatic will put a few more deer on the ground then any other breed of gun. I have saw the times that the first shot for some reason would be deflected by brush, or just a miss. On more then a few occasions the deer would not know where the shot came from and would stand as if frozen. The second shot of the automatic would put the deer down. But if you had to work a bolt, or pump, or shift a lever action the deer would head for cover instantly. And at times a wounded deer would need to be shot again as he made his way off. The auto provides instant second shots. And on a few occasions a running doe would come through and a shot would bring her down. I need to add I am a meat hunter first and a trophy hunter second. Behind the doe, would be a good decent buck that would present a standing still shot as he looked at the doe on the ground. The auto because of it's quietness in having a second shot would enable you to take the buck also. Only the hunters with enough experience will have witnessed the things I talked about. And while the kill is the least of the reason to hunt, when you are eating your game you kill. the kill will take on as added meaning.
