Best Scope Rings for a Rifle?
I'm looking for a really high quality scope base/rings for a leupold rifle scope. What do you recommend? The scope I plan to use is a Leupold Rimfire VX II 3-9x.
The rifle I plan to use is an Anschutz MPR 64.
Avoid aluminum mounts and rings.... Steel is going to be stronger, and more resistant to abuse (IE more likely to retain your zero if dropped)
I personally do not care for tip-off or Leuplold (AKA Redfield or "Standard") type mounts. My first choice is a Picatinny (IE "1913") mount, Weaver style (not to be confused with Weaver BRAND) is my second choice. Many believe that they are the same, that is not true at all, Picatinny bases are manufactured to more precise standards. You can put Weaver style rings on a Picatinny base, but you can seldom put Picatinny rings on a Weaver style base. A 1 piece base is also stronger, and lends some of its strength to your receiver which can enhance accuracy. However, for some rifles that require you to load through the top of the receiver become slightly more difficult to load with a one piece base.
Warne, Ken Farrell (sp?), Millet all make very nice 1 piece bases, IMO Burris Xtreme Tactical are the best 2 piece bases you can buy (I use them on my rifles) However, I think the "best" you can get for your rifle will be Warne Maxima bases.... they will be a steel two piece base, cost is ~$20 and it is a quality product
Rings are a no brainer - Burris Signature Rings, expect to spend $40+... The offset inserts are an additional $10-12, but are usually not needed.
When mounting a scope you want it as low as possible, without actually having the objective actually touch the barrel. When I mount n unknown scope/mount/ring/rifle package I choose the base I am going to use, then assemble the package using some cheap "super high" rings I keep on hand for this specific purpose. I then use a caliper to measure the clearance between the scope and barrel, then subtract .125" from that measurement, then subtract that number from the scope ring height. For example if I measure .415" between the barrel and scope when using my 1.025" test rings, I would look for a ring that is .415" tall
.415 - .125 = .610
1.025 - .610 = .415
I would then use "High" Burris Signature Rings which measure .420"
Burris Signature rings for 1" scopes and Weaver style bases are available in .270" (Medium) and .420" (High) heights
