Rifle Hunting Sniper Scopes
Old guys like four power and two and a half power scopes. Younger people like 3x-9x and 4x-12x. Why?
I have all these hunting magazines from my dead father's wooden chest. They all recommend a 4 power or 2 and a 1/2 power scope. I read about World War Two snipers. They made shots all the time out to 800 yards with 3 power or 3 and a half power scopes. My Dad hunted deer up and down California with a Sears Model 53 (Winchester 70) .30-06 bolt action rifle with a Bushnell 2 and a 1/2 power scope. In fact, he had the same rifle in .243 with a four power scope, and he thought the four power had TOO MUCH magnification.
Yet when I go to the range, most rifles now have either 3x-9x or 4x-12x scopes. According to my best friend, who is a ranger in Angeles National Forest, most deer that are shot, are shot at under 125 yards.
So what gives? Why the huge scopes on rifles now?
What do I consider older? My father had me really late in life. He was old enough to be my grandfather. He was in his 80's.
Up to about the 1960's, there were technical problems with variable-power scopes. The point of aim tended to shift when you shifted magnification. Improvements in technology got us old guys to buy variable-power scopes but we're also experienced with the fixed-power ones, and we haven't forgotten how well they work.
The reasons for the scopes being very high powered are a different story altogether. My hypothesis is that the youngsters buy a good scope for range work, where the higher magnification is an advantage (and where, after all, most shooting is done) but they simply aren't experienced enough to realize the down-side of the larger scopes when it comes to carrying one in the woods. The restricted field of view when your minimum magnification is 4x is really a handicap, and the extra couple of ounces of scope weight alters the balance a bit much for quick shooting, as well. But that may not be so bad for the younger crowd as I think, since still-hunting is becoming a lost art, with the great majority of deer hunters spending all their time up in a tree. The same goes for the rifles under the scope: heavy and unbalanced rifles that don't swing onto target well are a real pain in the rear to us old guys, but the younger crowd seem to be oblivious to their drawbacks. Well, to each his own, and I'll let those guys show off their factory-cartridge groups (which are almost as good as my handloads, but I'm not telling them that!) and I'll just keep on getting those shots on game that they can't make.
