What do you think about a Red Dot on a 30-30?
When I purchased my Marlin the dovetail sights where broken (30% off rifle cost), so I put on a Lever Scout. I asked before about which scope to get but the eye relief I think will be a problem for me. Red Dot sounds appealing. Using it for deer and possibly black bear in the N. Cascades.
FYI, extended eye relief scopes aka long eye relief scopes are readily available and they're intended to work on scout mounts.
Most red dot scopes aren't magnified and many came with a 5 MOA red dot which covers a fairly sizable area when the range is long. A 5 MOA dot will work great on short range targets. But when you use that fairly sizable dot to aim at distant targets, your shots won't be as precise. If you use a 1 MOA red dot scope, your shots will be more precise at longer ranges. Unfortunately, 1 MOA dots aren't as easy to see when the day is bright and sunny. This is especially true if you use cheap red dot scopes. Most who used 1 MOA red dots have lost the dot for a split second or two at one time or another. A 3 MOA red dot will be more suitable for your purpose but an extended eye relief scope will still outperform a 3 MOA red dot except under low light conditions. By the way, good red dots aren't that inexpensive and a good long eye relief aren't that expensive.
PS: Red dot scope is an item of modern design. Lever action aren't that "modern". Mixing technologies from different eras really isn't to my taste. This is only my personal preference.
PPS: If you hadn't mentioned that you already got the scout mount, I would recommend a receiver sight. Receiver sights work very nicely within 30-30's effective range even under low light conditions.
