Whats your opinion of the HMR 17 caliber cartridge ?
Im thinking of buying a Savage 95R17 rifle in the 17 caliber with a Nikon 4 x 32 prostaff rimfire scope as a replacement for my Trusty Ruger 10/22
300 yards really ? I thought the 17's practical range was only 150 before it dived into the dirt o know its Zinger of a round and flat but i wont be taking that long of a shot with a 4 x 32 scope
ohhh No id never give up that Ruger its possibly the best 22 ever made , just want a little more pop on the target and ive never been fond of the 22 mag
I agree about the 22 mag never have liked it used to have a 22 mag pistol that was about useless
Ok FMJ thanks what do you think of a Savage never had one ever , ive stuck with the R's Ruger and remington almost my entire life , first deer i ever took was with a Ruger 44 which is the big brother to the Ruger 10/22
I like it. They are good varminting rifles out to 300 yards, and are fun, low (no) recoil rounds to go have some fun with at the range without breaking the bank. As for a replacement for a .22lr? Nothing can replace something that gives you 500 rounds for $20.
EDIT: Yep, the .17 can actually be pushed a little farther than 300. The .22lr is good to about 100, and the .22 Magnum to about 150 yards. The .17 really pushes the limits of rimfires.
When I am working at Cabela's, and someone asks what my opinions are on a .22 Mag, I usually end up telling them it is just about the most useless rimfire out there. Costing more than 10X the .22lr's price, it offers little better performance. The .17 HMR is in a similar price range as the .22 Mag, and gives so much more.

All of Savage's firearms are very well made, sturdy guns. Savage has implemented some new technologies such as the AccuTrigger and AccuStock, which other companies are beginning to copy. These, especially the AccuTrigger, are really nice to have. I don't know if the model you are talking about has one or not, but it is certainly a plus when buying from Savage.
To make it short, you can expect just as good quality from Savage as from Ruger.
