What is the most accurate rifle/scope combo, and bullet, with the most knock down power, at the most distance?
I just missed an Elk ranged at 800 yards in Colorado, i aimed 2 ft over his back and still hit low. I've practiced those shots before and hit with no problem. I'm looking for another rifle combo under $3,000. I shoot a Browning 300 mag, with a pro staff 3X9 scope, and rem 300 win mag cor loc 150gr. And i need some advice.
I know that an elk is one of the more difficult game animals to hunt, but if you can't get any closer than 800 yards, you should be focused on getting better at stalking, not on buying a better rifle.
Your rifle is more than capable of making the shot you ask about. When zeroed at 200 yards, however, the trajectory would be negative 38 inches at 500 yards. My guess is that you haven't spent enough time at the range to make the shot at 800 yards.
I will stick by my suggestion to learn how to stalk closer. There is little justification in taking an 800 yard shot.
