One reason the US military is unparalleled in its battlefield effectiveness is because after each tactical operation every unit contributes a report of what it could have done better. These reports are analyzed and the results published in a comprehensive Lessons Learned report which the units then use to improve their performance.
Many organized airsoft teams do the same thing. Based on the number of videos on YouTube it looks like video cameraman is a mandatory airsoft squad position. These are the three most common mistakes that I see when reviewing these videos.
Participants do not take cover when under fire.
I know that they are just plastic BBs but nobody wants to get hit and make the trudge back to the respawn area. A hit player also takes one weapon away from his squad's fire support capability making it just a little tougher for the remaining squad members to fulfill their mission.
The only part of you that should ever be visible to your opponent's fire is is the minimum necessary to effectively fire your weapon. You want to get behind something and get low. If you can move completely under cover between two or more separate firing positions so much the better. Jumping out from the side of a building in full standing position several times to fire your weapon is an invitation to the respawn area.
Lack of fire discipline.
Just because your AEG rifle has a full automatic selector does not mean that you have to spray and pray all the time. Get low in a good firing position that provides some cover, put your rifle on semiautomatic and send one round per second downrange. That is still a pretty good rate of fire and you can keep it up for a long time with a 400 round magazine. The other guy is much less likely to stick his head out and shoot back if you keep a steady stream of BBs thawking around his position.
When it is time for half the squad to move from under cover to better firing positions you can temporarily flip your weapon to full automatic and completely discourage your opponents from shooting back at your exposed teammates.
Scopes on skirmisher rifles.
Most airsoft battles take place at 100 ft. or even less. You do not need a scope for that distance. Use the elevation setting on your rear sight and focus your eyes on your front sight. Most people can leave both eyes open while doing this, which makes for better situational awareness. The target will probably be blurry but that is OK. You will still hit it if your elevation is correct. It is much more difficult to acquire a target when looking through a scope because your lateral vision is limited to a few yards. You are giving somebody on the other side way too much time to acquire you.
