Which is better? The 30' 06 round or the Soviet 7.62 X 54 mmr?

I already own my Bushmaster AR-15 M4 style carbine. I want to hunt big game and after speaking with a game warden, he told me that he would not recommend a .223/5.56mm bullet for hunting big game, like deer, moose, wild hogs, and other big animals. He recommended a gun with a caliber in the .30's.
I am already saving up money for it and I have a small budget. I want to know which round is more powerful, packs a bigger punch, and will take out big game. I am thinking about buying either a M1 Garand surplus WWII rifle with the old stripper clips, or a Soviet Mosin Nagant rifle in 7.62 X 54mm r. I am having a hard time deciding which one I should buy. If you were me, which one would you pick?

Well, I own both Garands and Mosins, and I'm a fan of each.

As an American, I'd take the Garand first but it is a heavy and complex gun for just hunting. Also, you are going to put out some cash for a new barrel to be able to shoot well enough to hunt, as most surplus that you can afford has well worn barrels.

I do hunt with a Mosin, although it has been modified from stock and the trigger has been improved. I love the simple, robust Mosin rifle....cheap to own and shoot, and cheap to build a sizable collection.

The best Mosins by far are the Finns...you can still get them for $350 or so and a great deal on a great shooting gun.

Even a worn Garand is going to be $600 and up. And it's not really a gun to hunt with.

If you get a Russian Mosin, plan on trying several guns to find one that's really accurate. Avoid the carbines and go only with a 91/30. My best advice would be to buy three from a distributor for $250, test and keep the best shooter and sell the other two locally for $125 each.
