Mounting a scope on a Rem 7400?
I have a Remington mdl 7400 chambered in 30-06. For quite a while now, I have had a small 3-9 x 40mm scope that would fit in such a way with the rings that I did not need to remove the iron sights from the rifle.
I just recently bought a different scope with larger optics 50mm and had to remove the iron sights so that it would fit right. In doing so, I had to remove the screws from the factory tapped holes in the barrel, so now I have a 30-06 rifle with 2 holes to a depth of about 3/16 of an inch.
Ive never had a problem leaving these hole unfilled with my .223 Remington, but considering the greater pressures found on the 30-06 variant, is it dangerous to leave the screw out of these holes that are tapped into the barrel?
No, it's not dangerous. The manufacturer's pre-drilled holes don't extend anywhere near deeply enough to experience pressure from the bore when you're firing your .30-06. You're fine and this is frequently done when adding a scope with a larger objective.
