MarkIII Tactical Scope
Mortal Kombat 3 is the third installment in the highly acclaimed MK series. I remember when I first heard about this game (and the unmasking of Sub-Zero), I knew I had to get to the arcades and play this thing. Only if I could get my mom or stepdad to take me and give me a bit of money for the quarters. Though, in my opinion, it isn't as good as MKII, this one still is a timeless classic.
The game bumps the character count up to fourteen, and a fifteenth character is unlocked via a secret code. Returning characters are Jax (back from MK2, who has been outfitted with metal arms), Kano (back from MK1), Sonya (back from MK1), Liu Kang (still in the lineup), Kung Lao (back from MK2), Shang Tsung (still in the lineup but playable as of MK2), Sub-Zero (still in the lineup and now unmasked), and Smoke (back from MK2, this time playable but as a cyborg; accessed via a secret code). All new characters include Cyrax, Sektor, Kabal, Nightwolf, Sindel, Stryker, and Sheeva. What disappointed me was the exclusion of Scorpion, one of MK's most beloved characters (he would be included in an update of MK3 however, more on that in part two).
The gameplay is true to Mortal Kombat style. It is much faster that Mortal Kombat II, and the blood and gore have been beefed up much more. To keep true to character, Sheeva has green blood, which fans have called slime. Cyrax and Sektor have black blood, which fans have called oil. All the rest of the characters have the normal red blood. Along with the High Punch, Low Punch, Low Kick, and High Kick buttons that have been around since MK1, there is now a run button, which speeds up the game play immensely.
Also all new to the game are dial up combos, which are multi-hit strings of attacks that players perform by pressing certain buttons at the certain time. This dial up combos range from four hit to seven hit combos. They're very fun to watch when performed right, but the quick finger movement was always a pain.
The single player mode works a lot like its predecessor. This time, you choose between three different towers, which fans have dubbed as levels: Novice, Warrior, and Master. The number of opponents you fight increases with each level, but you always fight two bosses at the end. The first boss is Motaro, a Centaurian (half human half horse) who is tough to beat (like Goro and Kintaro, his predecessors). Unlike Goro and Kintaro, Motaro is invulnerable to projectiles, as they either go right through him or bounce off of him, making for an extremely tough battle. Those that get through him fight the returning Shao Kahn from Mortal Kombat II. Shao Kahn is faster, tougher, and has a few new moves in his aresnal. He still taunts, which allows for more free hits, though no where near as much (I suppose he wised up from MKII). Beating Shao Kahn means you save Earth fron total armageddon, which was his plan all along.
