I want to mount my Leupold 3x9x33 scope on my flat top AR-15.?
I plan on using the Leupold mark 4 scope rings. These rings come in medium or super high in height. Which height of these scope rings should I purchase. My AR-15 is mainly used for hunting and plinking.
You may be able to use the super high rings without any problems but I usually use a riser block and medium rings to put a scope on a flat top AR.
The problem with mounting a scope on a flat top AR is not getting the objective bell to clear the barrel or handguard like when you mount a scope on a conventional rifle. The problem is getting the scope high enough to get your eye behind it when you shoulder the rifle. The barrel sits very low relative to the stock so if you mount the scope just high enough to clear the barrel like on a bolt action rifle then you will be looking over the top of the scope when you shoulder the rifle. Look at how high the sights sit on an AR rifle with standard sights. You want the centerline of the scope to be at about the same height above the rifle as the iron sights.
