for taking photos what does a camera see easier - red light or green ?
I am thinking of fitting a laser scope to my camera for night shots, but which colour laser would the camera see better for focusing on ?
Which kind of camera?
Point n shoot cameras focus using contrast detection, using the main image sensor. Most digital cameras have twice as many green pixels as red or blue, because camera designers know the human eye is more sensitive to detail in the green spectrum and they put more green sensors in to their cameras. This said, green lasers aren't a good idea.
DSLR camera focuses using phase detect (while the mirror is blocking the main sensor) using a special sensor, which iotself is *not* more sensitive to green light.
If you're shooting near to you, use a regular flashlight.
If you have a bracket on top of your camera, most speedlights (flash guns) will have a focus assist beam pattern that shines from the front, and these are usually a pattern of red light, so there's another option.
If you're shooting further away, most everything will be in focus. It's the way depth of field works. Usually, I focus on something (anything) far away, then recompose my shot before pressing the shutter fully down. This works well, try it out at night before you have an important event.
I can't recommend using a laser unless you know the risks well.
