How do red/green dot sights work?

How do red/green dot sights work? are they like laser pointers where u can point it in people eyes and they'll see you? or is it only seen in the tube of the scope?



Red/green dot sights work by using a LED to illuminate a dot over were the round should fall. They do not project the light onto the target as a laser sight does.
