How do i determine my eye relief?
I have been wanting to mount a scope on my 8mm mauser on the rear sight. i have found a scope from leupold. The guy i am getting it from says he thinks the eye relief is 10-14 inches. if i need less than that like 8 inches or so could i still see through it?
It's not you that has the eye relief, unless you are referring to the actual clearance you have from the back of the site. That scope is a scout rifle scope, by the sound of it, so it is designed to be mounted out over the barrel where it works wonderfully on my wife's 308 Ruger Frontier, for example.
The eye relief of a scope is the distance from the back of the scope to where the image is properly formed. Hold the scope and look straight through it. Move it back and forth until you have an image that appears to fill the entire back end of the scope. At that point your eye is the correct distance from the scope, that's the eye relief. Get a friend to measure the distance.
A scope mounted in the conventional location, on the receiver, has an eye relief of around 3-4". At that distance from a medium eye relief scope you won't get a proper sight picture.
But you said on the rear sight, and that is mounted ahead of the receiver on a Mauser 1898. So... though I haven't seen a mount for that, if that's where it will be fitted, so that the back of the scope is ahead of the receiver, then I'd say it should work very well.
