Buying some new rifles for hunting.?
I have been hunting coyote, white-tail, mule, moose, elk and bear for about 3 years now with my dad. And now i want to get my own gun and i dont know what to get.
I was thinking of getting a 22-250 remington model 700 sps stainless for the coyote, but i dont know what kind of scope to get. I was thinking of getting a 270. win or a 270. wsm for white-tail, mule, caribou, big horned sheep, in either the Tikka T3 Hunter or the Browning A-Bolt Medallion with a 3x-9x, 40mm scope. And a 30-378 weatherby mag. for the elk, moose, black and brown bear with a 3x-9x, 40mm scope.
If you have any other suggestions for the rifles and scopes please add them. Which one should i get the 270. win or the 270. wsm and in what model?
I already have a 2 12 gauge shotguns and 1 22.
22-250 is sure a flat shooter, but it tends to eat barrels. For the varminter who is shooting prarie dogs, when the entire town knows whenever another dog gets zapped, that extra range can come in handy, but for coyote, no, a standard 223 would work just fine.
I'd not go for the 270 WSM. It is more of a 270 'magnum' and I don't know if it will stand the test of time. Maybe 10 years from now noone will be making ammo for it anymore. Plus those fat cartridges reduce a 'standard magnum' capacity by one, but a 'standard magnum' normally has one less round than a 'regular' chambering like 270 or 30-06 I'd suggest a 257 weatherby, or a 270 weatherby, or the 264 winchester magnum if you really want to go magnum, but a nice 270 winchester, just old regular plain, sure is a nice rifle chambering.
I think the 300-378 is way more wha-pow than is needed. I'd go with a standard 300 winmag, or possibly the 300 ultra-mag simply because it has 3 power level loadings, 1 that matches 30-06, 1 that matches 300 winmag, and 1 that almost matches 300-378
Alternatively, rework your equation a little bit
Go for a 243, that makes a nice coyote gun, ans can work well as a backup gun or a loaner gun (for your future girlfriend when you take her hunting with you!) for deer etc.
Choose a 7mm remington magnum for elk.
The 243 and the 7mm remmag will bookend around the Whitetail, Muley, Caribou, Bighorns, etc, just fine. You can choose which you need on a case-by-case basis
Then go for the tried and true 338 winmag for brown bear and moose.
