How common are red dot scopes, ACOG scopes and other low power scopes in Iraq?
I am talking about for US soldiers only. M16 rifles and M4 in Iraq and Afghanistan. How common are they? Roughly what percentage of soldiers use iron sights and what percentage use some type of aim assistant?
I believe you're trying to refer to the Aimpoint red dot Close Combat Optic (CCO) scopes the US military uses.
They're very common, although they're very misused. The optics were designed for situations that involve close combat, such as in an urban environment. But many units went nuts with it and got rid of their iron sights. The problem was that the optics weren't designed to be used at targets 100m or more out. Not only that, the reticule/red dot moves as you fire your weapon, so it's unreliable if you haven't zeroed in on a regular basis. Then there's the issue when the battery runs out.
I liked my CCO okay, but utilized a flip-up iron sight on my M4's Weaver rail when the situation demanded it. As far as other people, you'd have to ask them what they think.
