Problem in Browning A-Bolt Barrels?
I bought this rifle on 7mm rem mag caliber and have already finished 9 boxes of ammo yet the rifle is not zeroed(I have barska 10-40x50 SWAT mildot rifle scope installed by burris signature series scope rings on it).I got about couple of time 3/4 inch three shot groups @ 100 yds beside that it's about more than inch.I've even slided limb saver barrel De-Resonator on it and have played with it according to the book for a free floating barrel.I'm just tired of waisting valuable ammo and money at this ammo shortage time. Can please help, atleast give a thought.Thank you.
Tarzan, that your shooting 3/4 or 1.5" groups at 100 yards is normal for a browning with factory ammo. I know some will tell you that their rifle shoots 1/2 groups with factory ammo and they just might. My own experience of competitive shooting and training over the past 46 years now consistently shows that you need to tune a round to a rifle.
I have a factory stock Ruger 25/06 MKII with a heavy barrel and leupold optics. With factory ammo at 100 yards and using a vise it will group in the 7/8 inch area most of the time. Now I take the same rifle, load a 117gr bullet, do a series of powder brands and different weights, try different primers and I found "its" round. That rifle will put 3 rounds in .280 groups at 200 yards in a vise.
Check with people you know who reload their own and see how well their shooting improved by tuning their ammo and not their rifle. I whole heartily agree that ammo is expensive, and it takes quite a bit of shooting to justify getting into hand loading ammo. If you know someone who hand loads ask them to help you set up some rounds. You have the empties, get some bullets, powder, and primers. Do some testing and see if that Browning isn't shooting 1/2 groups off sand bags in a few weeks.
