What are some bolt action rifles that are chambered for the wssm cartridges and have a barrel length of 26"?
I want to get into target shooting, and I have read up on the wssm cartridges and really like them for what I want to do. The rifle I was going to buy was the Winchester model 70, however, the no longer sell it because of Browning buying them out. Is there an affordable bolt action rifle chambered for the wssm cartridges out there?
I have been high power rifle target shooting since 1973.
The WSSM's are nice cartridges - but not for target shooting - unless you are independently wealthy, money is not object, and you won't be competiting against anyone except for yourself.
Nearly all centerfire target shooting is based on the 308 Win because it is a NATO cartridge - and - many ranges associated with the Civilian Marksmanship Program have access to military ammo for free. That - and both commercial and military brass is very easy to find. 223 (5.56mm) is also popular for the last reason - but - due to the war in Iraq the military has no free ammo to spare - not even the old 55gr stuff.
Many CMP matches require you to use issued ammo. You cannot compete in these with an odd ball caliber.
Bottom line. Before you buy - go online and see what matches are being held in your area. These are listed state by state at the NRA competitions web site.
